more billboard blight?

Nothing in the past few months got me more worked up than reading about the proliferation of billboards, many illegal, throughout L.A. county.
And now the freeway signs, used in traffic conditions, traffic alerts and Amber Alerts, could be used?

California considers selling ads on signs used for Amber Alerts. The Schwarzenegger administration says posting advertisements on 674 freeway boards would raise millions for highways. Traffic safety experts disagree. (from the L.A. Times)

I understand the state budget is bad, but this continued assault of urban advertising blight on the greater L.A. area is an unfortunate victory to big companies -- both the corporations and the advertising giants, and another setback to those who think visual surroundings are an important aesthetic in the living standards of the community.
